Description

This spicy tandoori chicken is a flavorful and aromatic dish that brings the vibrant taste of Indian cuisine to your table. Marinated in a blend of yogurt, spices, and lemon juice, the chicken is grilled or baked to perfection, delivering smoky, juicy, and tender bites. Perfect for dinner parties or weeknight meals, this tandoori chicken pairs well with naan, rice, or a fresh salad.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Marinade:
    • 1 cup plain yogurt
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
    • 1 tablespoon paprika
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
    • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
    • 1 teaspoon garam masala
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • For the Chicken:
    • 6 bone-in chicken thighs or drumsticks
    • Fresh cilantro and lemon wedges for garnish

Instructions

  • Prepare the Marinade:
    • In a large bowl, mix yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, ginger, paprika, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, garam masala, salt, and vegetable oil until smooth.
  • Marinate the Chicken:
    • Make small cuts in the chicken pieces to allow the marinade to penetrate. Add the chicken to the bowl and coat well with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, for best flavor.
  • Cook the Chicken:
    • Grilling Method: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 6-8 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
    • Oven Method: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the chicken on a baking sheet lined with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through. For a charred effect, broil the chicken for the last 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve:
    • Transfer the cooked chicken to a platter and garnish with fresh cilantro and lemon wedges. Serve hot with naan, rice, or a cooling yogurt dip.

Notes

  • Use boneless chicken breasts or thighs for a quicker cooking time.
  • Add a pinch of red food coloring to the marinade for the classic tandoori appearance.
  • For an extra smoky flavor, use a charcoal grill or add a few drops of liquid smoke to the marinade.
