Ingredients
Scale
For the Halal Meatballs:
- 1 lb (450g) halal ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
For the Spaghetti:
- 12 oz (340g) spaghetti
- Salt for boiling water
Instructions
- Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic, parsley, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix everything until just combined. Roll the mixture into meatballs, about 1-2 inches in diameter.
- Cook the Meatballs: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, cooking for about 8-10 minutes. Once browned, remove the meatballs and set them aside.
- Make the Tomato Sauce: In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Stir to combine. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked through.
- Cook the Spaghetti: Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Serve: Place the cooked spaghetti on plates, top with meatballs and sauce, and garnish with fresh basil or parsley. Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can bake the meatballs at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes if you prefer a healthier alternative to frying.
- Add extra vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the sauce for added flavor and texture.
- Serve with a side of garlic bread or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
