The perfect balance of sweet and savory, these pretzels are coated with cinnamon and sugar, making them the ideal treat for any occasion. Whether you’re looking for a snack, dessert, or fun baking project, these pretzels will delight your taste buds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for coating)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until the yeast becomes foamy.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter, then stir until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  3. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Pretzels:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
    • Roll each piece into a long rope (about 20 inches long), then shape into a pretzel by forming a “U” shape, twisting the ends, and folding them over to form a knot.
  5. Boil the Pretzels:
    • Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda.
    • Gently drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake the Pretzels:
    • Bake the pretzels for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar:
    • While the pretzels are baking, mix together the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
    • Once the pretzels are out of the oven, brush them with melted butter, then dip them into the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  8. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with a cup of hot chocolate or as a sweet snack!

Notes

  • For a savory twist, you can skip the cinnamon sugar and top the pretzels with coarse sea salt instead.
  • Leftover pretzels can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to maintain their softness.
