This Chicken with Tangy BBQ Sauce recipe is a mouthwatering dish perfect for weeknight dinners or backyard barbecues. Juicy, tender chicken is smothered in a homemade tangy BBQ sauce bursting with smoky, sweet, and zesty flavors. Serve it with your favorite sides for a complete and satisfying meal

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Tangy BBQ Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the BBQ Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper.
    • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Season the Chicken:
    • Rub the chicken breasts or thighs with olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Cook the Chicken:
    • Heat a grill, grill pan, or skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the chicken for 6-8 minutes per side, or until fully cooked (internal temperature of 165°F/74°C).
  • Add the BBQ Sauce:
    • During the last 2-3 minutes of cooking, brush a generous amount of BBQ sauce onto the chicken, flipping and brushing both sides. Allow the sauce to caramelize slightly.
  • Serve:
    • Remove the chicken from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Serve with extra BBQ sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For oven-baked chicken, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the seasoned chicken for 20-25 minutes. Brush with BBQ sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  • Store leftover BBQ sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
